Thanks for the useful permission guide. I would also check this article about managing permissions for a lists, libraries and folders. There is also a plenty of tools that can make the task of managing SharePoint security permissions even easier. For example, scriptlogic released their security explorer for SharePoint several weeks ago and it works like a treat.
